Glazed Double Chocolate Cherry Cookies are full of two kinds of chocolaty goodness along with chewy dried cherries. A delightful cherry glaze takes everything over the top!
We Love Chocolate Cookies
This great recipe is for all the chocolate lovers out there. These fudgy cookies have not one, but two types of chocolate for you to enjoy and take care of that sweet tooth. In my house, that is definitely considered a win!
I think some of the best cookies combine interesting flavor profiles together to make something better than the sum of its parts. Let’s start with the dark chocolate flavor of the cocoa powder and the lighter, almost vanilla-like flavor of the white chocolate chips.
But, I didn’t want just a chocolate chip cookie. What kind of added deliciousness would compliment the double chocolate?
I had recently had some amazing cherry cookies which got me to thinking about how to do a mash-up between the two. We love chocolate and we love covering things in chocolate. I mean, chocolate covered cherries are a time-honored tradition!
So, I thought adding some dried cherries into this recipe would be the perfect compliment for the chocolate cookie. But wait, let’s do more!
Such a Simple Glaze and Perfect for This Cookie
While you could definitely triple up the chocolate factor by drizzling a chocolate ganache or a simple chocolate glaze on the top of these chocolate cherry cookies, I thought it would be good to double up the sweet cherry flavor.
A simple cookie or cake glaze always starts with powdered sugar as a base. From there, it’s whatever liquid you want to add a flavor profile. In this case, I used cherry juice because, you know, cherries!
But, you could use milk and cocoa powder to create a simple chocolate glaze. Or, get crazy and try things like cranberry juice or orange juice for a different flavor profile.
At the end of the day, I really liked the cherry glaze and the glazed double chocolate cherry cookies were born!
Can You Freeze These Cookies?
These cookies freeze beautifully, which is great. That way I can always have something sweet on hand if someone stops over or if I need to bring dessert to a party.
There are a couple of ways to freeze the cookies. The first would be to put them in a single layer on a cookie sheet and put them in the freezer. Once frozen, you can put them a ziplock back or other airtight container.
The other way would be to carefully place cookies in a ziplock bag or other airtight container in a single layer and then put them in the freezer. Either way, it is important to place cookies in a single layer in case the glaze is still soft.
These Glazed Double Chocolate Cherry Cookies are Great for the Holiday Season
This is a pretty easy cookie recipe and given they freeze well, something you can definitely bake ahead of the actual busy holiday season. And, they are the perfect cookie to add to any cookie tray or if you participate in holiday cookie exchanges.
These glazed double chocolate cherry cookies are also a perfect compliment to any Valentine’s Day celebrations you may have. Chewy chocolate cookies will definitely be appreciated as a Valentine’s Day dessert!
Enjoy!
Tips and Tricks for Glazed Double Chocolate Cherry Cookies
- All-purpose flour works well for this chocolate cherry cookie recipe.
- I always prefer to use unsalted butter for baked goods. This insures that the finished product won’t be too salty.
- Pure vanilla extract is highly recommended because the flavor is superior to imitation vanilla.
- If you’re unable to find cherry juice for the glaze, cranberry juice can be substituted.
- Make sure that the cookies completely cool to room temperature before drizzling with the glaze.
