This Philly Cheesesteak Flatbread takes a quick u-turn on the classic Philly cheesesteak sandwich.
Philadelphia and Their Cheese Culture!
People take their Philly cheesesteak very seriously. It’s one of the Philly classics.
I have been to Philly a number of times and always look for new places to try Philly cheesesteak sandwiches. Side note: Philadelphia is a really good food town. So many good places to eat with great recipes which is why I keep going back!
As for cheesesteaks, I did the Pat and Geno’s challenge and they were ok. Went to Campo’s and that was ridiculously good. Even found a great cheesesteak at the local Hilton.
The point being, you can go many places in Philly and experience so many variations and delicious recipes for Philly cheesesteak sandwiches.
So, I guess I’m breaking the mold making a cheesesteak flatbread. But, this isn’t the first time I strayed from tradition and it won’t be the last!
A Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich on Flatbread
So, I was I inspired by the cheesesteak and why I came up with this recipe. I wanted to bring the Philly flavor of those fun trips home.
Those Philly cheesesteaks earned a rep for good reason. However, I do say you can make an excellent revision of them.
With steak, peppers, cheese, and a bit of seasoning, you can really get that Philly feeling. Yes, even on a flatbread!
The Origin of the Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich
Pat’s gets credit for being the first steak sandwich restaurant in the country. It actually started as a hotdog joint, but then the owner wanted to change things up and put chopped steak in the bun rather than a hot dog.
That was successful so his friend Geno opened a place across the street to sell his style of cheesesteak sandwiches. Basically, the biggest difference is the way they cut the meat and the amount of swagger they cook it with.
Everyone has their own take on which is better and the real deal. People can literally debate it to a degree that would make your head spin.
Their simplicity matters most. You cook steak with peppers and add cheese. Toss into or onto the bread. Good to go.
So, enjoy this take on Philly cheesesteaks!
Tips and Tricks
- If you’re unable to find Steak-Umm or Gary’s Quick Steak, you can substitute chopped deli roast beef.
- Don’t skip infusing the oil with garlic. The garlic adds an extra layer of flavor to the flatbread.
- For best results, you should use a flatbread. However, I’ve also used a pre-baked pizza crust. Plain naan breads can be used, but they tend to be more for an individual serving.
- If you want to reheat any leftover Philly cheesesteak flatbread, simply place the pieces on a baking sheet that’s been lined with aluminum foil or parchment paper (for easy clean up). Place the baking sheet in a cold oven. Turn the oven on to 350 degrees. Once the oven reaches 350 degrees, the flatbread will be perfectly reheated.
Ingredients Needed to Make a Great Philly Cheesesteak Flatbread
Full instructions are found below in the recipe card
- Gary’s Quick Steak or Steak-Um – You can find those in the freezer section at the market. They work great because you can heat and eat very easily. No muss, no fuss. My personal favorite is Gary’s Quick Steak, but Steak-Umm is also a great option.
- Flatbread – I use the Aldi flatbread which makes two flatbreads. A twelve inch pre-baked pizza crust works great, too.
- Cheese – I suggest using a package of shredded provolone cheese mixed with mozzarella. You can find those in mixed bags, or buy them separate.
- Grated parmesan cheese
- Bell peppers – I like sweet red peppers. Either green peppers and/or yellow peppers work too. And, I just love that color of red peppers. Naturally, you can also use those hot red cherry peppers. Pepperoncini? Not going to stop you.
- Onion – I prefer using a red onions but white or yellow onion would work just fine.
- Mushrooms – These are optional, but if you want to add them, I would suggest cremini mushrooms for the most flavor.
- Garlic infused olive oil – This gets brushed onto the flatbread crust and adds so much flavor.
- Black pepper
- Salt
- Seasoned salt
- Pizza or Italian seasoning
- Fresh parsley

What Goes Great with a Philly Cheesesteak Flatbread?
The philly cheesesteak flatbread is phenomenal, and I love them. In my opinion, they taste amazing, one of the best flatbreads of all time! Try having them with a couple different salads.
- Field Greens Salad – This salad is so fresh and flavorful with an easy homemade balsamic vinaigrette, along with mouthwatering homemade croutons. It pairs perfectly with this flatbread.
- Italian Cucumber “Pasta” Salad – Spriralized cucumber stands in for pasta to make this fantastic low-carb salad.
- Chopped Cucumber Summer Salad – A cucumber salad offers a nice balance as well to the huge fullness of the cheesesteak, even if it is lighter on flatbread.
