These Greek inspired lamb meatballs with tzatziki sauce are are so easy to make and give a nod to traditional lamb gyros.
If you like lamb, you’re going to love these lamb meatballs. First of all, they’re super easy to make.
Easy enough, in fact, that you can whip them up any night of the week. There’s no chopping involved, just throw everything in a bowl and mix it up. Simple, right?
Then, what makes these meatballs really special is a quick and easy tzatziki sauce that you’ll throw together while the meatballs are baking. If you’ve never had tzatzik, it a tangy yogurt based sauce.
The tzatziki gets great flavor from shredded cucumber, dill and a lot of garlic. There’s just a little bit of prep work, but it’s totally worth it. You have plenty of time to prepare this sauce while the meatballs are baking.
When your meatballs come out of the oven, nestle them in warm pitas, slather them with the tzatziki and you’ve got yourself a fun and delicious dinner. To take it a step further, you can also add a few extras like sliced cucumber, sliced red onion and chopped tomatoes.
Can this meal be prepared ahead of time?
If you’re really pressed for time, you can make both the meatballs and the tzatziki sauce ahead of time. When you’re ready to serve the meal, you can reheat the meatballs in the microwave and warm the pitas in the oven. Then serve with the tzatziki sauce and whatever other toppings you would like.
This meal is a great weeknight family dinner, but it would also be a fun and tasty meal for a casual dinner with friends. You won’t have to spend a lot of time in the kitchen cooking and everyone can put together their own pita with whichever ingredients they want.
Just set everything out on a platter and serve it buffet style. Then you can sit back and enjoy the company and the meal. Plus the clean up will also be easy.
How to make lamb meatballs with tzatziki sauce:
- Start by mixing all of the meatball ingredients in a mixing bowl. I find that your hands work best to get all of the ingredients incorporated. You want to make sure that you’re not over mixing the ingredients, that could result in a meatball that’s overly dense.
- Form the mixture into 1 1/2 inch meatballs and place them on a baking sheet. If you have a rack for your baking sheet I suggest using that. It raises the meatballs up enough to allow the hot air in the oven to circulate all around the meatballs.
- While the lamb meatballs are baking, prepare the tzatziki sauce.
- I prefer using whole milk Greek yogurt for the sauce because of the rich and creamy texture it gives it.
- After you’ve grated the cucumber for the sauce, you need to remove as much of the moisture from it as you can, otherwise the tzatziki won’t be as thick and rich. The best way I’ve found to do this is to wrap the shredded cucumber in a clean kitchen towel and squeeze the water out.
- The pitas are best warmed up before serving. To warm them up, wrap them in foil and warm in the oven for the last 10 minutes of the meatballs baking time.
- You can serve the lamb meatballs and tzatziki sauce on their own with the pita bread or you can add cucumber slices, chopped tomatoes and thinly sliced red onion.
