Last month I was fortunate enough to be able to attend Pinch of Yum’s Tasty Food Photography Workshop which was such an incredible experience. Lindsay is an incredibly talented photographer and an amazing teacher. The workshop took place in their beautiful studio in Minneapolis and it was impossible not to feel inspired working in that bright, gorgeous space.
This is actually the second Tasty Food Photography Workshop that I’ve attended. Back in December I went to a workshop that focused on becoming more comfortable with the camera’s manual settings as well as learning about lighting, composition, editing, etc. I learned so much from that experience that when I found out they were offering a different workshop, I knew I had to attend.
This workshop was very intimate with only 12 attendees and was VERY hands on. The focus of the workshop was branding and styling. By using examples of other’s work and walking us through several excercises we were able to get a much better sense of what we wanted our own brand and style to look like.
Lindsay also demonstrated different styles and techniques, so that we could really get a feel for what she was teaching us. We could immediately see the results on the computer, which was so helpful.
A good part of the day was devoted to letting us practice what we’d just been taught. We had full access to all kinds of food and props and the lighting in the studio was so amazing. Did I mention there are 12 windows?! We also had Lindsay and her team available to help us and answer any questions that we had.
I should also mention how inspiring it was to be surrounded by other food photographers and bloggers. In the world of blogging, it’s not often that you’re face to face with others who share your same passion for food and photography. It was a great opportunity for all of us to be able to talk about what we do on a daily basis with others that are doing the same thing.
After the Tasty Food Photography Workshop, I walked away with so much more knowledge. I feel like I have a much clearer idea of what I want my brand and style to look like and I was able to improve my photography skills overall. Along with learning about branding and styling, we also learned about lighting, composition, how to tell a story with your photos and editing. I now feel so much more confident in my abilities and am having so much fun with food photography.
