Sausage Making Done Right

Klement’s has a delicious variety of summer sausages as well as snack sticks and fully cooked bratwurst, polish sausage and Italian sausage. Their sausage has been handcrafted by three generations of artisans. It is naturally hardwood smoked using leaner, more premium meats.

If you’re entertaining, Klement’s summer sausage and snack sticks are a perfect addition to any meat and cheese platter and the fully cooked sausage is great for making quick family dinners on busy nights. It’s sausage that links people together.

If you’re not familiar with Klement’s, it’s a 60 year old company, started in Milwaukee and built on European Tradition. The roots of the Klement Sausage Company can be traced back several generations to central Europe where sausage-making is knitted tightly into the fabric of the community and where techniques and recipes were handed down through the Klement family.

The sausage is made with old world recipes and is produced in small batches. The result is sausage that has a most delicious taste.

Sliders are a Fun Appetizer

I love sliders. I think they’re a perfect appetizer because with their small size they easily fit on snack plates, they’re hand-held and come in so many wonderful varieties.

Think of all those wonderful slider recipes out there. Little sloppy joes, meatball sliders, little burgers with melty cheese – so many options. People ask me what are the best sliders I’ve ever had and I have to say the one I have in my hand at the time you ask!

I happened to have a number of different Klement’s summer sausages on hand. And, since all Klement’s sausage is made with all natural ingredients, they all have a delicious, rich flavor. Perfect in any recipe.

I thought the summer sausage would be perfect for a slider recipe. It’s just the right size, and for this recipe, I thought the garlic summer sausage would have the perfect flavor for these sliders.

Making the Garlic Summer Sausage Pretzel Bun Sliders

First, what kind of small buns would be best with these sliders. They had to hold up to the summer sausage, so something like light dinner rolls or Hawaiian rolls might be a little too soft.

That’s when I thought about pretzel buns. Great integrity, tasty and easily found in your local grocery store. However, any sturdy slider bun will do if you can’t find small pretzel buns.

Now, we can’t have a summer sausage slider without some cheese! And, for this slider, I thought Manchego cheese would be an amazing addition.

Manchego is rich and full of flavor and has a slightly salty finish. It’s really a perfect match. However, there are also some suggested substitutions below if you don’t have access to Manchego cheese.

Now, this meat and cheese slider is just begging for a wonderful mustard. I thought a little spicy / sweet combination would work well with the garlic summer sausage and Manchego cheese.

So, I went with a spicy brown mustard and balanced that with a delightful apricot jam. So good!

At this point, cut the slider buns in half with a sharp knife and put on the mustard, summer sausage and cheese. Brush the tops of the buns with butter and top with course salt. Then, let the sliders bake in the oven until they’re warm and the cheese is melted.

You’ve just made yourself a very tasty Garlic Summer Sausage Pretzel Bun Slider!

Be Sure to Make a Double Batch

These are the perfect snack for your Super Bowl party or any other game day get-together. Your guests will absolutely love the rich flavors of the sausage, cheese and apricot mustard all combined on the pretzel bun slider rolls.

Tips and Tricks

  • These sliders can be assembled up to a day ahead of time and refrigerated. While the oven is preheating, take the sliders out of the refrigerator to take the chill off. They may require an additional 5-10 minutes of baking time for the cheese to melt and the buns to become toasty.
  • If you’re unable to find pretzel bun sliders, you can substitute whatever slider buns you’re able to find.
  • Swiss, gruyere, monterey jack or provolone cheese are good substitutions if you’re unable to find manchego cheese.
  • Spicy brown mustard is preferred over other varieties of mustard. The spiciness helps to balance the sweetness of the apricot jam.

Ingredients Needed to Make Garlic Summer Sausage Pretzel Bun Sliders

Full instructions can be found below in the recipe card

  • Apricot jam
  • Spicy brown mustard – Highly recommended over other varieties such as yellow or dijon mustard as you want the spiciness of the mustard to balance the sweetness of the apricot jam.
  • Balsamic vinegar
  • Pretzel slider buns
  • Klement’s garlic summer sausage
  • Manchego cheese – Gruyere, Swiss, Monterey Jack or provolone cheese also works with these sliders.
  • Butter – My preference is unsalted since you’re also topping the sliders with coarse salt.
