My daughter, Nicole, LOVES sloppy joes….but…..yes, there’s a but…..she love Heinz sloppy joes, straight from the can.  I’m ok with that when I need to make a really quick meal, I know she’ll be happy (actually ecstatic) with that.  But I really would like to have a scratch recipe that I can make that she will like just as well (that’s the food blogger in me coming out).

I had pretty much given up on finding a scratch recipe that would measure up to the Heinz with her, but then all of the grocery stores around us stopped carrying Heinz sloppy joe mix.  The only way we can get it is by ordering it online, by the case.  Nicole loves this sloppy joe mix so much that my other daughter, Kelly, actually ordered her a case of it for her birthday.  I think that was her favorite birthday gift!

Since the Heinz is now a little hard to come by, I have once again taken up my quest to find the perfect sloppy joe recipe.  When I saw this recipe at The Black Peppercorn, I knew I had to give it a try.  I compared the ingredients to the ingredients on the can of Heinz and there seemed to be a lot of similarities, I thought the flavor would be close.

So last night, I made the The Black Peppercorn‘s recipe.  We all thought the sandwiches were delicious and they were really easy to make.  They have a really nice barbecue  flavor and the flavor of the chili powder really came out, they aren’t spicy, just really flavorful.  I would definitely make them again.

Now….the big question, did they taste like Heinz sloppy joes?  They didn’t, but don’t get me wrong, they really were delicious!  But I will have to continue on my quest to find the perfect recipe for Nicole.  Meanwhile, I hope you will give these a try yourself!

 

Sloppy Joes

  • 2 lbs ground beef (I used 93% lean)
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 – 6oz can tomato paste
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 3 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp fresh ground pepper
  • 8 hamburger buns

Heat a large skillet over medium high heat.  Brown hamburger for about 5 minutes.  Add chopped veggies and garlic and saute for another 5 to 7 minutes until onion is soft.

Stir in water, tomato paste and spices.  Simmer for 10-15 minutes to allow flavors to develop.

Spoon onto buns and serve.
